Today the quality of online learning in education is a subject to skepticism and criticism. Stakeholders of universities raise the question if the quality of instruction and learning in the virtual classroom is the same as in the traditional classroom. The present literature review explores a range of issues affecting the quality of online learning in higher education; examines challenges universities face in terms of quality instruction in online education; difficulties in assessing student learning outcomes; understanding of the quality of online education from different perspectives of administration, faculty, and students. Based on a relevant literature review, this research paper explores some solutions and recommendations for improving the quality of online education, and further research on exploring more innovative, efficient, and effective instructional and assessment techniques for the online environment.
